The Pi Bike, designed by Martijn Koomen and Tradas Maksimovas, was officially presented in March 2017 to coincide with "Pi (Greek) Day", the annual international celebration of Pi Greco, held on March 14 each year. Not surprisingly, March 14 is also the birthday of Albert Einstein. A contribution that in this case, the Designer, wanted to make to Mathematics which is always interconnected with Design and to one of its greatest exponents.
Mathematics and Mobility. Manual skill merges with technology and gives life to new forms
The Pi Bike was designed by Martijn Koomen and Tadas Maksimovas, handmade using carbon fibre material, whose shape reflects the mathematical symbol of Pi Greek (π) and was created to coincide with Pi (Greek) Day and Albert Einstein's birthday.
Martijn Koomen and Tadas Maksimovas started this project after seeing the work of Malaysian illustrator Tang Yau Hoong for the first time. Martjin and Tadas embraced the complex challenge of taking a simple drawing and making it a fully functional 3D object. Hence the choice of material and the desire of making it by hand, to make it as similar as possible to the sketch.
