Futurist architecture on an island in China. Containers and grids overlap

The Xu Xujun Studio designs a residence with the superimposition of old containers, in which the space is created by their offset volumes, connected by balconies and wooden frames. the new "boxes" generate a modern and futuristic building.

The project, located in Orenda - Chongming Island, near Shanghai, has been constructed with old containers. Their location, isolated on an open pasture, as well as the narrow interior spaces of the containers, made the project challenging. In order to give the ten staggered containers a unique aesthetic, the designers extended the interior space of the containers to the outside, creating an empty box connected to each closed container.

The added boxes, framed by grids, increased the usable area, meeting the functional requirements and forming a contrast of solidity and emptiness with the containers. The natural light can be filtered through the grids, generating a poetic vision of light and shadows. The containers and the new boxes generated from them together create staggered and overlapping architectural forms, making the building modern and futuristic.
