Funny, mundane and intellectual. The stairs of Kips Bay in New York City dressed in colour

Designer Sasha Bikoff designs the staircase in the famous Kips Bay Decorator Show House, a house dedicated to children, where every year famous designers transform the interior spaces. Colours, geometries and movement are the hallmark that the designer wanted to give to this project

When she was presented with the first opportunity to design the staircase at the famous Kips Bay Decorator Show House, she knew it would be a challenge for the layout of the staircase shape itself. I wanted to create a pleasing aesthetic impression for her guests, the children of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. The space had to talk to the children and show them that their creativity should always be turned on when it comes to making their dreams come true

In this project the Designer has remained faithful to the DNA of her brand, a design as fun as it is mundane and intellectual. A big fan of the Memphis Milanese Movement, she has expressed this passion with the use of colours and motifs of this movement of the 1980s, as opposed to the traditional European architecture of the old showhouse world. The space had to be more than just a hymn to the past; it had to both sing the praises of the past and look to the future

Its shapes are inspired by simple motifs, such as zig-zags, polka dots, squiggles and pyramidal triangles. These shapes, when combined, create a sense of movement that accentuates that of the staircase itself, as you move from one room to another. She also used a fun and modern custom carpet for the stairs, which is the first highlight of the space, as it sets the pastel colour palette. There is a more contemporary atmosphere on the walls, while integrating the existing colours, shapes and movement

To further complete the space and accentuate it, she used polaroids on the walls depicting supermodels, rappers, in addition to mirrors. Vintage lamps adorn the walls and a glossy paint was used for the ceilings: canary coloured ceilings with baby blue and lime green moldings. The result is a Technicolor dream
