Transparent pavilion in London. Materials, shadows and lightness design the movement

Selgascano designs a pavilion entirely made of plexiglass in London, in which the rigid structure winds over the green park of Royal Park and its movement is designed by the light that filters and the shadows that are cast. Architecture is viewed as an experience

Serpentine Pavilion was developed at the request of Julia Peyton-Jones and Hans Ulrich Obris and the first step in the design process was to think of the most suitable material. The pavilion was to be built in London's Royal Park, thus giving rise to a debate on local materials and how to integrate the project into the surrounding area. Hence the decision that the pavilion would be entirely made of a single material and transparency would be its motto, thus an architecture completely made of Plexiglas was developed

This first idea collapsed due to local regulations, in particular the strict fire safety regulations, which totally demolished the chosen material option. There was also the awareness of the fact that they were working on the 15th anniversary of the pavilion, the celebration of what is known as a "crystal" anniversary and that it had to be, without resembling any of them, a sort of tribute to all the stories told through those architectures

The choice was therefore to use all the most rigorously architectural tricks that can be administered to accentuate the one concept that was ultimately to emerge: pure experience. As the only global concept, the Studio looked for a way to explore architecture through its most common and simple elements: structure, light, transparency, shadows, lightness, shape, sensitivity, change, surprise, materials

The Pavilion emerges at the end as the result of many pavilions where the important point was to create that experience that the visitor can never forget, something they have never experienced before in any other building, but at the same time it is also something that includes all the experiences that others have done before. Although the secret hope is that those memories are mostly about things that were related to something called nature
