Restaurant in Metz. Glass monolith for the expansion of the terrace above the Pompidou centre

The Pompidou Metz centre, designed by Shigeru Ban, quickly became an icon, the challenge for the Studiolada was to create an area of 100 square metres while preserving architectural integrity and intervening in a concise and elegant manner

Completed in 2010, the Pompidou Metz centre imagined by Shigeru Ban has become an architectural symbol not only for the city of Metz, but for the whole country. Given the large number of visitors who visit the museum and the restaurant, it soon became apparent that there was a need for more space to eat inside the terrace. However, the idea of modifying an existing building was not without major implications for architectural integrity that would not alter the facades and volumes

The answer was to create a "distance", to solve questions of identity between the architecture and the coexisting. A precise and elegant approach, to respect the work of Shigeru Ban. The "addition" to the building respects its heritage and character while giving it a specific meaning and identity

The volume consists of a light and clear glass monolith, which makes it radically different from the Museum in terms of architectural vocabulary and choice of materials including the use of wood, large white forms and framed windows. The abstract and intangible facades are materialized by the reflections that form on the clear forms. The roof seems non-existent, as its edge is hidden by the windows

The integrity of the museum is preserved since the new structure is simply on the spot and could be removed any day if necessary. The new "room" is not an extension, but an autonomous object that seems to avoid contact with its environment

The atmosphere created is a microcosm formed by the terrace and its surroundings. Although the lines that form the architectural volume are simple and pure, the boldest approach concerns the choice of materials: local glass and ceramics
