Organic forms for a hotel in California. Materials and vegetation strengthen the symbiosis

Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos design the Hotel Solaz Los Cabos in lower California. The selection of materials, vegetation and construction methods reinforces the concept of symbiosis and gives a contextual congruence with the surrounding environment.

The extraordinary natural environment of the Lower California peninsula with its semi-desert landscape in ochre tones contrasted with the deep blue of the Sea of Cortez providing the perfect setting. Celebrating the union of landscape, architecture and art, Solaz Los Cabos stretches out in front of the sea over an area of 9.8 hectares.

Three large terraces develop curves from east to west to accommodate hotel rooms. The circulation through these terraces has been proposed as "canyons", to serve as dividing corridors, in which thick vegetation is inserted to ensure greater privacy. Thanks to this slope all the spaces enjoy a spectacular view of the sea. The hotel facilities are located on the lowest level above the beach.

The access level is located inside the main building. This building with great flexibility and organic movement is composed of three levels of overlapping blocks. The volumetry of this building implies the same concept of integration with the context and the movement of its bodies generating the possibility of better views and giving it a tectonic character. The different types of rooms and suites in the hotel emerge from the topography that glides harmoniously over the sand. To access them, a patio-foyer serves as an entrance and at the same time, as a bridge between the sinuous exterior and the welcoming geometry of the interior. A warm atmosphere, tropical woods, fabrics with fresh Mexican colours and lines marked by stone elements creating a distinctive contemporary aesthetic in every room.
