House of an artist

Farmhouse in Lanzarote. A house for an artist, with pigments of colours, tradition and modernity

César Manrique chooses an old farmhouse to transform it into his home and his studio, reinterpreting the traditional style through his point of view as a multifaceted artist, a house that dwells between the past and the future

At the beginning of 1986, Manrique renovated an old farmhouse, reusing the ruined existing building and expanding it located on an agricultural property he had purchased in the 1970s. It is an architecture of the traditional language reconsidered from a modern point of view, in which the aesthetics and comfort, seen from the eye of the artist, stand out. He lived in this house until 1992, the year of his death. In 2013, it was opened to the public as a House-Museum

The House-Museum is located in the middle of a palm garden in the picturesque town of Haría, in the north of Lanzarote, where the traditional forms of life of the island are still preserved today. In Haría, the artist found the tranquillity and contact with the nature he loved so much

The house consists of two courtyards, which serve as an entrance to the various rooms, like the typical houses of these places, from here you enter a surprising world of personal possessions, tools, rediscovered objects and pieces of craftsmanship to which Manrique gave an aesthetic function. The whole space is characterized by the nobility of the materials and the typical characteristics of good taste. Even in the furnishings, the antique blends with the modern, nothing is left to chance

The exuberant vegetation, both external and internal, contributes to creating serene and welcoming environments. In the atelier, isolated from the house, you can see the original scenery in which the painter painted on a daily basis, surrounded by pigments, tables with drawings, easels and unfinished paintings, all preserved just as the artist left them before dying. Traversing these rooms, in silence, with the breeze that enters, you can enjoy a unique experience and enter a unique world: that of the artist
